353 | Ellen's parents Isaac and Mary Arnold (nee Newman) arrived in SydneyNSW AUS on the "Emigrant" on the 8 June 1849. After marriage,Charles first worked for the Cordeaux family on their "Bendooley"property at Berrima. He moved to the Boorrowa area about 1868. Thishas been asertained from the places where the birth of the childrenwere registered. He went to Hovell's Creek, about 35 ks. northeast ofBurrowa. A couple of old timers (brothers) still living there in the1980's recalled their father talking about the days when Charlie Weekslived there. It is likely he left Hovell's Creek in the mid 1880'sbecause he was definitely there when his mother, Frances, died in 1882because he is the "Informant" on her death certificate which giveshis place of abode as Hovell's Creek. He was a carrier betweenBoorrowa and Goulburn and sometimes as far south as Wagga Wagga. Inthose days the main coach road from Wagga Wagga to Goulburn passed tothe north of Boorrowa and from there on to Gunning. When the HumeHighway was constructed between Sydney and Melbourne it continuedsouth from Gunning to Yass, and then Albury, cutting out Boorrowa,Cootamundra, Wagga Wagga and all towns on the original route. Charlesthen took up land near the cemetery at Burrowa, called "Eastwood". In1890 he sold "Eastwood" to Edward Horne and then moved to a biggerproperty called "Killarney" on the Young Road. After his death"Killarney" was broken up and some of these seperate parcels of landwere retained by several of his children. Properties now known as"Beverley", "Gunabol" and a part of the famous "Merryville" plus theCartobe Winery on the Young Road were all part of "Killarney" -according to Charles' granddaughters Evelyn Hancock, nee Weeks, andKathleen (Cassie) Weeks. Because none of the pre 1921 Burrowa Councilrecords have survived, it is not possible to asertain exactly whereand what size "Killarney" was without a very extensive search of theLands Department Records. "Beverley" and "Merryville" are now owned bythe Merriman family and are generally recognised as the best StudMerino properties in the country. It is worth noting that there wasanother property not far from Boorowa that was and may still be named"Killarney". It has been established that Charles and Ellen raisedFrank Weeks, the illegitimate son of Charles' sister Maria Weeks. Itis also very likely he and Ellen helped with the children of hisbrother John after the sudden death of John's wife Elizabeth (neeRumary) at an early age. Sometime in the early 1880's the spelling ofthe name Weeks for Charles' family began to change to Weekes and thatspelling has remained with most of the descendants of this family eversince. There is no obvious reason for the change and it was notchanged through official channels. The Weekes spelling also remainedwith the family of Frank Weeks. It is also worth noting that by thetime of the 1861 English census the "Wicks" spelling of the surnamehad all but disappeared as was the "Weekes" spelling. It is also worthnoting that "Weekes" spelling was very rare in the earlier census andchurch records. However those two spellings seem to have survived herein Australia more so than in England. Descendants of Charles and Ellenfound so far number 267 with 127 spouses. Ellen's parents Isaac Norrisand Mary, formally, Arnold (nee Newman) arrived in Sydney on the"EMIGRANT" on the 8th. June 1849. NOTE: Also on board the "EMIGRANT"were members of the family of Charles' mother Frances (nee Jeans). This Jeans family went north of Sydney to the developing area aroundNewcastle. | Norris, Ellen (I9087)

Lydia wasbaptised on 2nd April, 1799 (sic) in the parish of Iden (sic), Sussex.Very little is known of Francis and Lydia, except that they did havesix children by 1828. Their eldest son, Francis, who came to NewSouth Wales, stated on his shipping papers that his father was asawyer in the timber trade, so he may have worked for his father,James. Francis died in Ewhurst, Sussex, on 10th July, 1848. It isnot known when Lydia died. | Milham, Francis (I8206)

384 | From "Sussex Born, Aussie Bred" (by Paula Hume and Don Blunt)James Milham The only fact known about James is that he was atimber merchant. It could be said that he was prosperous. Sussex, atthat time, was covered by forests which provided timber for shipbuilding. But today James would have had to turn to farming, astheforests are all gone. The hills of the South Downs in Sussex, whichhad these forests, are now mostly open pasture land. On 15January, 1787 at the Parish Church of Ewhurst, James married EstherSargent, the daughter of Thomas Sargent and Sarah Oliver. EstherSargent. Esther was baptised on 17 April, 1765 in the Parish ofTicehurst, Sussex. She was also know as Hester, which is shown on themarriage papers. Many years later, a great grandson of James andEsther, John Milham, wrote a letter to the Rector of Lewes, asking forhelp in connection with the Milham and Thomas estates, which he wastold were "in chancery". In the letter, John mentioned all the elevenchildren of James and Esther by name, with their birth dates. Theywere Hannah, Sarah, John, Thomas, Judith, Francis, Elizabeth, Mary,James, Esther and William. Nothing else has been found about Jamesand Esther except their deaths. James died on 12th April, 1831, aged69 years. Esther, or Hester, died on 16th August, 1838, aged 74years. Both died and are buried at Ewhurst, Sussex, England.____________________________________________________________MARRIAGE: IGI M148041 1067149 Details taken from Photocopy of ChurchRegister held by Christine Harris. 385 | From Gil Wright - 11 Sep 2019 I didn’t pay much attention to which sub-tree I uploaded - was doing it to help with DNA test (which I finally did at Amazon at the request of the Small family). However, I did find a reference at Australian Royalty (mainly about convicts) which states under the entry for George Sheder’s birth: 25 November 1814 Peasmarsh, Sussex, England, United Kingdom Source: Spurway, John, ed. Australian Biographical and Genealogical Record. Series 1, 1788-1841, with series 2 supplement, 1842-1899. Sydney: A.B.G.R., 1992 Source: Purnell, Marion (editor) Text: James appears to have been born to unmarried parents: James Ashdown and Mary Sheder/Sheader” The record goes on to mention that he died as Ashdown. Grandfather (Reginald Auld) had a lot of correspondence with NSW BDM about it and he pointed out to them that there are parallel baptism records for some of George’s children born in NSW. 1841 V1841605 31A/1841 Sheader Elizabeth A George Jane 1843 V1843606 31A/1843 Sheader Harriet George Jane 1840 V1840444 27A/1840 Ashdown Harriet George Jane 1840 V1840817 26A/1840 Ashdown Elizabeth A George Jane 1851 V1851844 37A/1851 Ashdown Sarah George Jane 1854 V18542114 56/1854 Ashdown Martha George Jan There should be a formal name change between 1843 and 1851 but these were only stored at the Land Registry from 1875. Earlier than that, they were published in the paper but searching for “SHEADER” is all but impossible as Trove matches this to “SHED”, “SHEDDING”, SHEARING” and similar words in an effort to be helpful. Interestingly, Mary J A SHEADER married George MILLS in 1853 so she hadn’t changed her name. The only other SHEADER birth/marriage or death was Osbert in 1894 born to an Elizabeth SHEADER (no father listed) - presumable not our Elizabeth who was married in 1859 and would have been 54 years old at the time. | Sheader, George (I7739)
