  From "Sussex Born, Aussie Bred" (by Paula Hume and Don Blunt)James Milham The only fact known about James is that he was atimber merchant. It could be said that he was prosperous. Sussex, atthat time, was covered by forests which provided timber for shipbuilding. But today James would have had to turn to farming, astheforests are all gone. The hills of the South Downs in Sussex, whichhad these forests, are now mostly open pasture land. On 15January, 1787 at the Parish Church of Ewhurst, James married EstherSargent, the daughter of Thomas Sargent and Sarah Oliver. EstherSargent. Esther was baptised on 17 April, 1765 in the Parish ofTicehurst, Sussex. She was also know as Hester, which is shown on themarriage papers. Many years later, a great grandson of James andEsther, John Milham, wrote a letter to the Rector of Lewes, asking forhelp in connection with the Milham and Thomas estates, which he wastold were "in chancery". In the letter, John mentioned all the elevenchildren of James and Esther by name, with their birth dates. Theywere Hannah, Sarah, John, Thomas, Judith, Francis, Elizabeth, Mary,James, Esther and William. Nothing else has been found about Jamesand Esther except their deaths. James died on 12th April, 1831, aged69 years. Esther, or Hester, died on 16th August, 1838, aged 74years.
