Ellen GOODE died on 2nd April,1931 at the home of her daughter, Mary Cooper, Woodville, Uralla andwas buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Uralla. The Rev. F. No doubt theMilitary Authorities have already informed you. It was onthe early morning of the 12th May during an attack on the enemytrenches at Bullecourt, where many of our bravest and best havefallen that Walter met his death. It may be one colsolation foryou to know that Walter never suffered, he gave me his Wallet andasked me to forward it home to his Mother. Late that Afternoon I wasblown up with a heavy shell, and sent to hospital with concussion.I have now rejoined my unit and this is the first opportunity I havehad to register and post it. Poor Walter and I were always the verybest of friends, he asked me to write home to you as well for a photoof him if you could send one I would be much obliged as he was my bestfriend. The wallet is just how he gave it to me, and I sincerelyhope Mrs kerr that you receive it safely. After the season was over they played Coffs Harbour andCoffs kicked a free goal and that was the only points scored againstthe- 5 stone 7lb division Les thinks. Sailing - VJ's, sailed at Copeton Dam, Clarence River,Taree, Grafton to Maclean and back, sailed with Jim Fabian who workedwith Ian at the Lands Dept. boat was called.Streak. Les hadGreyhounds, about 1964, one was called "Our-Hour", out of Roman Earland Our Bonanza - won its first race before it was even ear-marked,the President of the Greyhound Club nominated it as they were short ofstarters, and it won at 6 to 1. Work History: Left school at 15,first worked at a Delicatessen doing general hand work, then went toGerards, Mackelleys, back to Gerards as a general junior assistant,weighing out sugar, flour or selling clothes. Worked at a bush sawmill with Jerry Ford from Casino on theCasino Road Les and Fred Perring bought a little sawmill off Rodneyand Norman Smith, then worked with Fred and Rodney. Grafton CityCouncil working with Parks and Gardens. Worked for Ross Payne privatecontractor at the Brewery loading trucks Feb 1977 worked with WestonsBiscuits with Russell Margaret Wilson, David Page. Caltex SouthGrafton with Les Nelson from March 1982. Les Nelson sold out to PatMacDonald Caltex-Golden Fleece South Grafton - taken over by MillsPetroleum, made redundant on 6 Nov 1992. Markets anywhere in Australiafrom 1993 onwards making jewellery. Hamilton-Armstrong Reunion- 10th November 1985 Mummulgum Hall. They owned the Commercial Hotel Grafton and the Royal HotalBangalow and were very good friends with Mary & Jack Hamilton ofFineFlower. Jack used to run the mail from Grafton to Baryulgil andwhen in Grafton stayed at the Commercial Hotel. Emily's mother hadcome to Grafton just before Les died in 1941 and she stayed for a fewmore weeks until Emily was more settled. Emily, John & Kevin returnedto Canberra to her parents' home. Priscilla Rogan from Baryulgilwanted Emily to take Grandma Hamilton to live with her and she wouldpay Emily's way, also Ema and Valarrie Alderman who lived in Goulburnoffered a home for Emily and her two sons. Emily rejoined theworkforce and worked in Sydney and Canberra. She finally worked inthe Public Service with the Dept. of Works. After Emily retired,she rented her home in Canberra and went to Batemans Bay to live for afew years but returned to Canberra.
