Notes - About 1956 Les used to help milk the High school cows after school andsaved this money for seven weeks to buy a pair of football boots toplay Rugby League. About aged 12 Les played as a Forward and Wingerfor the Grafton High School football team and they won the Footballknockout in Casino and never got a point scored against them for afull season. After the season was over they played Coffs Harbour andCoffs kicked a free goal and that was the only points scored againstthe- 5 stone 7lb division Les thinks. A Grade Senior BasketballWaratah's Gold - at approx ages 14-16 playing with Kenny Williams(Aboriginal), Darrel Taylor, Malcolm Eggins, Ashley Rooke, Ken Smith,Bruce Fisher, Played Rugby League for United Football Club Graftonwhich became Grafton Ghosts, Surf Life Saving - fresh and salt waterBronze medals. Sailing - VJ's, sailed at Copeton Dam, Clarence River,Taree, Grafton to Maclean and back, sailed with Jim Fabian who workedwith Ian at the Lands Dept. boat was called.Streak. Les hadGreyhounds, about 1964, one was called "Our-Hour", out of Roman Earland Our Bonanza - won its first race before it was even ear-marked,the President of the Greyhound Club nominated it as they were short ofstarters, and it won at 6 to 1. Work History: Left school at 15,first worked at a Delicatessen doing general hand work, then went toGerards, Mackelleys, back to Gerards as a general junior assistant,weighing out sugar, flour or selling clothes. Upper Copmanhurstworking on a Cattle property for about 6 months managed by JackForbet, doing cattle work, cutting poles and girders. CopmanhurstShire Drove a Water tanker for a contractor working for CopmanhurstShire. Worked for the DMR on the Casino Road, driving Rollers, fencingetc. Lost teeth in accident with a round post on a river bank ofSportman's Creek - three fellows flipped up one end and Les held thebutt of the post in the hole with a crow-bar, the post came over toofar and knocked Les in the face and he had to have all his teethremoved.. Sleeper cutting for NSW Railway working with Rodney Smith.Bought his own saw, then worked with Bruce Fisher and Rodney and MervReece. Worked at a bush sawmill with Jerry Ford from Casino on theCasino Road Les and Fred Perring bought a little sawmill off Rodneyand Norman Smith, then worked with Fred and Rodney. Grafton CityCouncil working with Parks and Gardens. Worked for Ross Payne privatecontractor at the Brewery loading trucks Feb 1977 worked with WestonsBiscuits with Russell Margaret Wilson, David Page. Caltex SouthGrafton with Les Nelson from March 1982. Les Nelson sold out to PatMacDonald Caltex-Golden Fleece South Grafton - taken over by MillsPetroleum, made redundant on 6 Nov 1992. Markets anywhere in Australiafrom 1993 onwards making jewellery. Hamilton-Armstrong Reunion- 10th November 1985 Mummulgum Hall.
