  Jane Mulholland 1850 - 1945 was the second daughter of Mary andAlexander Mulholland. She was born at Carlisle, England and came outto Australia with her parents. Jane married Richard William Watson,a butcher by trade in a newly built church atRocky River on 18 Jul1877. The Rev. D.M. Sinclair was the celebrant. Witnesses wereMary Ann Watson and Robert Mulholland. At the age of 52 years JaneWatson acted as midwife to her daughter Eliza Roach at the birth ofher son Alexander Audley Roach, on 29 Jun 1902. From then on, forthe next twenty two years she assumed the unofficial role of districtmidwife, sometimesriding a horse side saddle to patients at Arding,Maitland Point, Tolley's Gully and Rocky River. There was a doctorin Uralla at the time - Doctor Tet Fong, but he was only summonsed asa last resort because the patients could not afford the fee. Shekept a simple record of all her patients and included, in some cases,a few notes pertaining to the event. Oft times she would be calledout during the night and when she did arrive she would take charge ofthe patient; sometimes there would be a responsible member of thefamily who would see to the cooking and housework for the rest of thefamily, and then sometimes she would have to do the cooking as well.Most times she would stay with the patient until the baby was feedingproperly - usually two or three days. Again if there were anydifficulties she would remain at her post for a week, and in one casenoted by herself it extended to two weeks. When well into hereighties she assisted her son, Robert with the rearing of his youngfamily following the death of his wife at an early age. Janepassed away peacefully in her home on 22 Feb 1945 and was buried inthe old cemetery, Uralla beside her husband, Richard William Watson.A granite monument has been erected to their memory by the family.
