CENTRAL CRIMINAL COURT.
(Before Mr. Justice James.)
Senior Crown Prosecutor, Mr. L. J. McKean, K.C.
MANSLAUGHTER.
Edith Florence Ashton and Wilton Beauley McKenzie were charged with having mali-
ciously slain Jessie Elizabeth Baker, at Sydney
on December 3.
Mr Curlewis (Instructed by Mr C R Penny) appeared for Edith Ashton and Mr Owen (instructed by Messrs Ferguson and Vine Hall) for McKenzie.
The case for the Crown was that Baker after visiting Ashton was admitted to the Womens Hospital in Crown-street where she died. When questioned by the police. Ashton denied having any knowledge of the woman but when introduced to her at the hospital she said Hullo Jessie."
In her dying depositions the woman stated that she had gone to Ashton's place on three previous occasions.
The Jury acquitted McKenzie, who was dis-charged. Mrs Ashton was convicted.
Detective-Sergeant Lynch stated that Ash-ton had the reputation of being the most noted offender in the Commonwealth, and had been carrying on the business, to his knowledge, for years. She had been before the Court on several occasions for similar offences, but had been acquitted.
Ashton was sentenced to five years' penal servitude. She took the sentence very calmly, and walked out of the dock with head erect and in a collected manner until she reached the door when she had to be assisted by a wardress. After sentence was pronounced a girl at the back of the Court screamed, and was carried out in a fainting condition, and the prisoner cooly turned round to look at the girl before she left the dock.
