"On Saturday morning, November 6th, the City Coroner, Mr H Shiell, JP, held an inqust at South Sydney Morgue into the death of John Hilder, labourer. Evidence was given to show that the deceased was in the habit of wearing a strap round his waist similar to the one which fastened his feet together when he was found in the water. Dr Milford stated there were no marks of violence on the body. The jury returned a verdict of 'found drowned'." We are left to draw our own conclusions, but as John's wife, Eliza, died just a few days later, it seems reasonable to assume that he took his own life. (Medical):A STRANGE DEATH. The City Coroner (Mr H. Shiell, J.P.), held an inquest this morning at the South Sydney Morgue, on the body of a man named John Hilder, who was found drowned at Leichhardt on Thursday. Alexander Hilder, boot-finisher, Charles-street, Petersham, son of the deceased, stated that the deceased was 61 years of age, a laborer, resident at Walter-street, Leichhardt. He last saw his father alive on Wednesday night, 2nd instant, about 9 o'clock. He then seemed all right. He has left a widow, who is now dangerously ill, and has been confined to her bed for the last three months. Witness never heard deceased threaten to commit suicide. His father always wore a strap around his waist, similar to that produced, which secured his legs together when the body was found. Dr. Milford made a post mortem examination of the body on Friday. He found, no marks of violence. The skull was abnormally thick, so much so that the doctor thought it must be due to disease. The cause of death was asphyxia by drowning. Thomas Foreman, brick maker, Flood-street, Leichhardt, on Thursday morning, in the course of his work at Chalkland's brick yards, off Marion-street, Leichhardt, saw a hat and some clothing on the bank of a waterhole in the yard. Suspecting something was wrong, he examined the waterhole, and saw the top of a man's head above the suface of the water. Information was given to the police. A constable arrived and the body was taken from the water. Witness, then recognised the body as that of John Hilder. The waterhole is between 8 and 9 feet deep. Deceased was in employment until the time of his death. Constable Samuel Emmett, stationed at Leichhardt gave evidence as to removal of the body from the water. There was no strap around the waist. There were no marks, as of a struggle, seen about the waterhole. The pockets of deceased's clothing contained only a pipe, tobacco, and knife. Considerable delay was occasioned by the absence of Jesse Hilder, another son of deceased, his evidence being deemed very desirable from the fact that he had informed the police of frequent expressions, of late, of intention on the part of his father to do away with himself. The young man, after appearing at the early part of the inquiry, went away unobserved, and a constable had to be dispatched after him. He was reprimanded by the Coroner for the unnecessary detention of the jurymen at such a busy time as Saturday morning. This witness was unable to state, except from hearsay, that his father had ever expressed any intention to commit suicide. As open verdict was returned by the jury of ' Found drowned.' | Hilder, John (I6764)
